Jagori has been working on issues of migrant women and women workers in the informal economy over the past several years. In 2002, we carried out a study to explore migration and work patterns of women in Rajasthan and Gujrat. A detailed research undertaken in 2003 focussed on the lives of first generational women migrants to Delhi. Rights and Vulnerabilities(2004) explored women’s migration from different rural areas to Delhi and their subsequent life in Delhi. A special focus of the report was the different forms of work in the informal economy, such as domestic workers, construction workers, factory workers, junk dealers, self-employed women, piece-workers and home based workers. In this study, it was found that vulnerabilities of domestic workers were located in their lack of negotiating power in all aspects of their work including wage negotiation, number of holidays, getting a cup of tea or snack or getting gifts and bonus. With insights from this study, we decided to further explore the living and working conditions of female domestic workers in the city of Delhi.

In 2008, a Jagori fellow conducted a study in Jaipur which demonstrates the informal nature of domestic work and and the vulnerabilities of the domestic workers.

The latest study, conducted in 2010, supports existing research on migration of domestic workers, processes of settling down, assistance of social networks in settling down/finding jobs and the lack of standards in their working conditions.

A Women’s Self Help Group in Madhya Pradesh is spearheading change in the region, says Kulsoom Rashid

Largely tribal and extremely poor, Dindori district is perched almost on the Madhya Pradesh – Chhattisgarh border and is remote by any standards. So when a group of women located in Dindori names their federation after the famous local woman icon, Rani Durgavati, who is said to have courageously defended her kingdom of Gadha – one of the old independent Gond states – against the Mughal emperor Akbar, the symbolism is certainly striking.

This handbook is a comprehensive guide prepared by JAGORI, on conducting WSA’s (Women’s Safety Audits) in low income urban neighbourhoods, with a special focus on essential services. The Action Research Project on Women’s Rights and Access to Water and Sanitation in Asian Cities (2009-11) implemented in two resettlement colonies of Delhi is also the result of a partnership between JAGORI and WICI (Women in Cities International), a Canadian based organization working in Canada and internationally. In Delhi, the project is being implemented in partnership with Action India.

The handbook also serves as a wonderful example of partnering with people across continents to produce a work of knowledge and learning on globally shared concerns.

The Gender Inclusive Cities Programme (GICP) is funded by the UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence Against Women. This programme was implemented by four international project partners in cities across the globe:

• International Centre and Network for Information on Crime in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
• Jagori in Delhi, India
• Information Centre of the Independent Women’s Forum in Petrozavodsk, Russia
• Red Mujer y Habitat de America Latina in Rosario, Argentina

The aim of the programme was to create cities that are inclusive and respect the right of all people, including women, to live, work and move around without fear or difficulty. Gender Inclusive Cities sought to identify the factors that cause and perpetuate inequalities and exclusion, as well as the policies and programme approaches that enhance women’s inclusion and “right to the city”. The first stage of this programme consisted of knowledge-generation using the methodological tools of mapping, research and review. Afterwards, WICI, in partnership with local governments and NGOs, used this knowledge to pilot interventions designed to reduce the public vulnerability and exclusion women and girls face. Pilot interventions looked at promoting women’s and girls’ access to and understanding of their rights.
