Regional and International Initiatives

At the South Asian level, JAGORI is a founder-member of the South Asian Network of Gender Activists and Trainers (SANGAT), and hosts the SANGAT secretariat. JAGORI is also a member of KARTINI, an Asian women’s studies network.

SANGAT

SANGAT has networked with over 400 activists, development workers and NGOs for exposure to successful development and peace building strategies and programmes in South Asia, cooperation and dialogue among South Asian NGOs and NGOs in other regions. Our work has facilitated increased collaboration among people’s organisations and development NGOs in South Asia. SANGAT links with resource centres in the region to facilitate easy dissemination of materials. Workshops and events organised by SANGAT have helped in building conceptual clarity and evolving strategic responses to macro policies and programmes which adversely affect the lives of the poor.

SANGAT has also been in the forefront of movements for peace and social justice. Several cultural events on these themes have been organised during the last two years, and have evoked a very positive public response.

KARTINI

The Kartini network was launched in 2003 with JAGORI as a founding member. A course on “Gender, Identities, Conflict and Peace in Asia” was organised by JAGORI, SANGAT and Kartini in April 2005. JAGORI is also a partner in an ongoing Kartini research project on sexuality and sexual rights, which is exploring aspects of non-normative sexualities in India and Indonesia.
