Despite cases regarding lack of safety of women in Indian cities being numerous and publicized, provoking public and media debate, these incidents are just part of the larger known reality of violence against women in public.

With the growing incidences of violence against women after the horrific 16 December gang rape case last year, the urban planning needs a relook to live up to the promise of freedom and opportunity to everyone and specially women. The overt and covert forms of violence inflicted on women in cities keep their mobility and freedom perennially curbed.
